Distractions

I has the green thumb! See! And this is my Aloe Vera plant. The small, dying one is also some kind of an Aloe. For all this dying thing I blame my roommies, who didn't water the plants while I was in Germany. Oh well, I guess that's natural selection.

And how I got my green thumb? By dyeing. I had yarn and found some egg color and a rubber glove with a hole in it. I used turquoise and then black for the sock yarn and then dipped some gray Kamena wool into the remaining turquoise solution.

During coloring the Kamena I was a bit distracted, a cute French guy dropped in and was admiring how some people can make clothes from scratch (or sheep). I popped the hot Kamena into cold water and it felted a bit. I hope it's still usable though. Damn all cute guys...

The sock yarn turned out just like I wanted it: almost black with just a little color in it. Very Punk. The yarn was WolleRödel's 4-ply natural white sock yarn. Just like Regia, only cheaper.

And what was I supposed to be doing? Knitting my weapons for Sock Wars III and writing the damned thesis (Master's, nothing more, for heavens sake!). Oh yeah, a friend is right. PhD-comics isn't any fun when it's true... All these years in the University have made me a super good procrastinator.

Color me beautiful, part II

This is the bag full of hot steam and yarn after the heating.

I also tryed to dye two cotton shopping bags. The other one looks like I killed a clown and the other one is nice and green. You can also see all the necessary chemicals needed for the project... the chocolate and the lovely italian Sambuca.

Jämäliuoksella kokeilin värjätä kaksi täyspuuvillaista ostoskassia, toisen kirjavaksi ja toisen kauniin vihreäksi. Pöydällä välttämättömimmät kemikaalit: teobromiinia ja etanolia...

Drying in the bathroom: a multicolored shopping bag, a very lightly pinkish shopping bag (what happened to the green?!) and the yarns. And a nice selection of un-paired socks that belong to my roommies.

Kylppärissä roikkuu kuivumassa paitsi parittomien sukkien kokoelma, niin myös lankavyyhdit ja ostoskassit, joista toinen mystisesti kadotti kaiken vihreän värinsä ja jäi lievän vaaleanpunaiseksi. Toinen sentään säilytti kirjavuutensa, vaikka vähän haalistuikin.

And the finished product: lovely yarns! I like the colors, altough the yellow isn't showing that much. But the green and blue are nice and the red is almost purple. It was fun and easy. :)

Valmis tuote: Ihanan värisiä lankoja. Keltaiset kohdat näkyvät vain auringossa, mutta vihreä ja sininen onnistuivat hyvin. Punainen on miltei viininpunaista. Paljon kauniimpia kuin alkuperäinen harmaa. Kokeilu onnistui hyvin, värjääminen ei ollut ollenkaan vaikeaa, kun ei hae säntillistä lopputulosta värilastu kädessä.

Color me beautiful, part I

Ostin The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook -kirjan ja halusin sen innoittamana kokeilla langan värjäämistä elintarvikeväreillä (köyhän värjärin Kool Aid...). Uhrina oli vajaa kerä vaaleanharmaata seitsemän veljestä -lankaa ja väreinä punaista, vihreää, sinistä ja keltaista. Tarkoitus oli kokeilla ja leikkiä väreillä, ja olenkin lopputulokseen ihan tyytyväinen.

I bought a book named The Twisted Sisters Sock Workbook and decided to try dyeing some wool blend yarn with food colorings. Almost like doing it with Kool Aid, but a lot cheaper, since they don't really sell Kool Aid in Finland. I used just basic colors: red, green, blue and yellow. Since I haven't done this before the purpose was just to play with colors.

Järjestelmällisen kotikemistin työmaa... kuvassa näkyy myös vanha vihreä hiusväri, jota ajattelin joskus kokeilla villoihin hiusteni sijaan. Näin vanhana kun ei enää kehtaa värjätä hiuksia vihreiksi. Ehkä sitten kun olen tarpeeksi vanha.

Pussukassa on väriliuoksessa uitettua, etikalla maustettua lankaa ennen mikroaaltouunikäsittelyä.

The bag is oven proof plastic and the yarn has been dipped in to the coloring solution. Instead of a steam bed (witch I don't have) I used microwaveoven to heat the yarns. The picture is taken before the heating.
