Kaukomaille

Olen vaihteeksi lähdössä valtameren taakse, tällä kertaa ihan hupireissulle. Matkaevääksi ostin Birgit's Wollstübchenista pääsiäisgoottipuuvillalankaa ja keinokuitutikapuulankaa, sekä bambutikut. Viereisestä marketista sain limesuklaata ja siideriä. Marketin pihalla oli muuten kaljanmyyntikärry ja pari pöytää, joiden ympärillä istui eläkeläismummoja tyytyväisinä. Rento meisinki.

Pienoisen blogitauon aikana olen kerrankin tehnyt töitä, ja saanutkin ihan uuden innon niiden tekoon. Lisäksi olen stressannut tulevasta muutosta... Seuraavat pari viikkoa menee matkaillessa, sitten uuden nettiliittymän saaminen saattaa kestää. Tiedossa siis hyvin epäsäännöllisiä päivityksiä.

For once I've been working hard and not hanging in the internet for the whole time. I'm really starting to love my work again. I've also been stressing out because we'll have to move in two weeks... and I'll spend the next to weeks in Germany and in Alaska. And then it might take time to get a connection to the new place, so we'll see when I get to blog again.

R&D

Our research and development department has been a busy little beaver. The upper picture shows the first step of making wooden knitting needles. If you have enough band-aid you won't even cut yourself. On the other picture there are several sets of needles that have been cut and sandpapered once. I bought some finer sandpaper for the last treatment, but I still would want to get some wax for the needles. I guess waxing isn't necessary, but my fellow knitter says it's a good lubricant and gives a nice finish.

Oh, the knife in the pictures is there just to annoy americans... I believe that they have a weird phobia of sharp objects. My parents got me my first knife when I was about ten years old so I wouldn't have to borrow my sisters' knives. How ever is a child going to learn how to carve wood and not her fingers if not by practise..?

Askartelipaskartelin puisia sukkapuikkoja. Yläkuvassa on amerikkalaisten kiusaksi puukko (niillä on outo terävien esineiden fobia) ja teroitettu puikko. Teroittamiseen käytin puukon lisäksi tavallista kynänteroitinta. Alakuvan puikot on jo kertaalleen hiottu. Kuvan oton jälkeen hioin ne vielä hienommalla hiekkapaperilla sileiksi. Sain vinkin puikkojen jälkikäsittelystä, mutta en ole vielä päässyt rautakauppaan hankkimaan liukuvoidetta.

This week

I've been mostly surfing for patterns. And eating meds. It's the pollen season and I'm tired and sneezing and crying and blowing my nose. The medication helps a bit; I'm just tired if I take it.

Next week I shall spend my time in Germany drinking Sekt (sparkling wine). Does anyone know any good yarn shops in Bonn? I found couple via the local yellow pages, I will report those here if I get a chance to visit them. I've understood that sock yarns (wool blends) are supposed to be cheaper there than in Finland. And the selection is of course wider.

Later this spring I'll also visit Anchorage, Alaska. One would think there would be nice shops there, since it's supposed to be really cold in Alaska. Maybe I'll find nice knitting needles and perhaps some books there.

Alpakkapalpakka!

Suuresti odotettu paketti saapui ja nyt minulla on yli kilo ihanaa, vihertävää alpakanvillaa. Alpakka tuoksuu mielestäni vähän kamelilta, kämppiksen mielestä kamelinkakalta... Egypti tuoksuu samalta. Outoa, miten eri maat tuoksuvat erilaisilta, ja miten tuoksut jäävät hajumuistiin todella pitkiksi ajoiksi.

Viikonloppuna voisin kuvailla herkkulankoja ja lopulta viimeistellä sen tietokannankin. En ole oikein ehtinyt tehdä mitään, kaikki aika on mennyt flunssan potemiseen, töiden tekoon, hermoromahduksen kehittelyyn, sun muuhun epäoleelliseen.

I finally got the alpaca yarns I ordered from USA. They're just lovely, and I love the greenish colour and also the smell, witch reminds me of camels and Egypt (my roommie said they smell like camel poo, but I love the smell anyways). I'll try to add some pictures here over the weekend, if I'm not too tired... -having the flu and a nervous breakdown at the same time (and still trying to work at the same time) is quite energy consuming. I haven't even finished the database yet, although I now know how it's supposed to be done. When I grow up, I want to a have a alpaca farm and I want to live in a lighthouse. There's just that I'm allergic almost to everything and I'm afraid of heights... -have to find a way past those first.

Kremppaa piisaa

Tällä kertaa selkä sanoi yhteistyösopimuksen irti, suuttui kai viikonlopun urheilusta. Autoin pakkaamaan asunnollisen tavaraa ja siivoamaan tyhjän asunnon, tavaroiden kantamiseen oli onneksi käytettävissä nuoria, reippaita miehiä. Onneksi sain huomiseksi ajan naprapaatille, joka on ennenkin tehnyt ihmeitä selälleni.

Päivää piristi sentään sähköposti amerikasta: tilaamani langat ovat lähteneet matkaan! Postittaja oli vieläpä ystävällinen ja kirjoitti paketin päälle, että kyse on lahjasta, jotta välttyisin tullilta. Katsotaan nyt, mitä mahtavat sanoa. Olen kyllä varautunut maksamaan mahdollisen tullin, vaikka harmittaisihan se tietysti.

I got an email from USA, the yarns I ordered have been shipped. Yippee! We'll have to see what they say at customs, although the person that mailed the yarns said she wrote "Gift" on the package. I hope this cheers me up: I'm in agony because I my back hurts like a giant pineapple in ones... -well, in any human orifice. That's what you get for helping other people move.

Työt haittaa harrastuksia

Koko viikon riivannut lenssu ei vaan ota talttuakseen, mutta lopulta oli pakko mennä töihin taudista huolimatta. Edes neulominen ei oikein edistynyt kotona läsimisestä huolimatta. Aloitin sentään ensimmäisiä lapasiani sitten ala-asteen. Kotona roikkuminen kävi kuitenkin aika kalliiksi; mopo jatkoi eilen retkiään ameriikan maalle asti. Tilasin ensimmäistä kertaa netistä lankaa, ja vielä amerikkalaisesta lankakaupasta. Saas nähdä, mitä sieltä tulee ja koska, matka Atlantin ylihän on tunnetusti pitkä ja hankala.

I've had the flu for almost a week now. It's getting really expensive, since I've had too much spare time being home almost all week. I ordered some yarn from the US... We'll see if the package ever gets to Finland; I know the trip over the Atlantic is looong. I visited the States last fall, but I didn't have any time to check out any local yarn shops. I don't mind, since I bought a lot of cheap books, clothes and shoes that filled my suitcase just fine. I really liked the country and the people and would like to go there again, but boy they were just freaking about all that "security"stuff. I didn't even try to get any knitting needles or a crotchet hook into the plane. I'm sure they would have arrested me, since I already had to go through some extra-tight-ass-security-sweeping (apparently just because I had a foreign passport).
